The Versatility of HVOF Burner Rig Testing for Ceramic Matrix Composite Evaluation

Effective testing of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and CMC/coating systems for high temperature, stress, velocity and/or severe oxidation/corrosion environments is a critical need in materials/coatings evaluation extreme hot section parts jet engine hypersonic applications. Most current technology can evaluate two or three the conditions given application; however, incorporating as many thermo-mechanical-environmental factors highly advantageous to understand combinatorial effects. A oxygen fuel (HVOF) burner rig offers an excellent platform these conditions. In this work, following different test using HVOF on SiC-based CMCs are highlighted: (1) fatigue at temperature >Mach 1 compared typical stagnant air environment, (2) hard particle erosion ≤Mach (3) ~Mach 5 near-hypersonic very exposure.
